63 Relining and adjusting rear drum brake: Remove the rear wheel (see page 32). Unscrew 10 mm hex nut from pull rod. Using a screwdriver, force the upper brake shoe outwards. Disconnect the return spring and take out the brake shoe. Proceed in the opposite working sequence when installing.

Adjusting rear brake: The foot brake acts on the rear wheel: to adjust, turn the hex nut (10 mm key) at the end of the pull rod to the right (clockwise) until the rear wheel is just braked. Then slacken off the hex nut by 3 - 4 turns (equivalent to about 25 mm [1 in] free at the travel brake pedal see Fig. 9, page 16. Warning: If free travel is not sufficient, the brake could lock on while the machine is being ridden. Fig. 63 Every 15000 km (10000 miles), check the complete brake operating linkage. Clean the brake drum and shoes and grease the brake shoe actuating cams. Do not use sandpaper or emery cloth to remove a shiny surface from the brake linings, and do not chamfer their ends. Check conditions of brake disc. Brake fluid On the hydraulic system for the front brake, the quantity of brake fluid in the reservoir should be up to the 'MAX' mark when the brake pads are new. 64 As the brake pads wear down, brake fluid level in the reservoir sinks. Do not add too much brake fluid however, or else it may overflow. Note that brake fluid will damage the paintwork.
