Steering head and wheel bearing play Steering head bearing play After the first 1000km (app. 600 miles) and then every 15000km (10000 miles), put the machine on its stand and rock the fork legs vigorously to and fro. No play must be detected. If there is play, the steering head bearings must be adjusted. Fig. 53

Note that only the BMW authorized workshop is in possession of the friction meter required for accurate pre-loading of the steering head bearings.
Front wheel bearing play After the first 1 000 km (app 600 miles) and again every 15000km (10000 miles), put the machine on its stand and check front wheel bearing play by pulling the wheel to and fro along its axle. No play should be detected. If it is, adjust the front wheel bearings. Fig. 54
Rear wheel bearings Check the rear wheel bearings (integrated into the final drive) for freedom from play by attempting to move the wheel to and fro along its axle.
If axial movement as measured at the wheel rim is more than 0.3 mm (0.012 in), check the final drive assembly.
This work should also be performed only by an authorized BMW workshop.
Recommendation:
If operating conditions are very severe, renew the grease in the steering head and wheel bearings every 30000km (20000 miles)
